Having won the gold medal and London's Royal College of Art when he left in 1962, Hockney has gone on to become the most widely acclaimed British artist born in this century. In recent years his work has been nowhere more celebrated than in the United States, which he has adopted as his primary home. When Hockney discovered Southern California in 1963, he realized that he was uniquely suited to capture pictorially the idyllic vision of carefree existence that Americans associated with that place and time.
