Many full-page, full-color and b+w illustrations throughout.The author studied at Cambridge University and the Courtauld Institute of Art, London and is an expert in Italian Seventeenth century art and has published extensively on the subject.Published in limited quantities (these books sell out quickly) by Whitfield Fine Art, London, a major dealer specializing in Italian pictures. The three pictures analyzed within this book are: "Portrait of Francesca Capponi, as St. Mary Magdalen," by Jacopo Pontormo; "Portrait of man holding a book inscribed 'Franc. P'," by Parmigianino and "The Madonna and Child with the Infant Saint John the Baptist," by Andrea del Sarto. The book contains extensive research/history on these three fine examples of Italian work as well as information on their conservation. Contains numerous full-color illustrations including many full-page closeup reproductions of brushwork, infra-red reflectograms and step-by-step images of varnish removal at the Mazzocchini Studios in London. This is a scarce and wonderful resource on Italian painting and it's conservation and scholarship. Read more
